Sen. Burris was appointed to President Obamas vacated Senate seat by former Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D-IL) in December 2008. Gov. Blagojevich was later convicted on corruption charges, including trying to sell the Senate seat for personal gain. Sen. Burris offered several different explanations under oath about how he came to be appointed to the Senate. The Senate Ethics Committee investigated and issued a letter of qualified admonition, finding Sen. Burris actions and statements reflected unfavorably on the Senate, as he should have been aware he was providing “incorrect, inconsistent, misleading, or incomplete” information to investigators and the public.
