Project title: Alternative Income Streams in Indonesia: Use of Rompongs in Fishing Practice
Year: 1999
Location: Wkatobi Marine National Park, South East Sulawesi.
Outline: 'I was fortunate to receive support from the Henrietta Hutton Memorial Fund to undertake fieldwork in south-east Sulawesi. My 6 weeks in Indonesia taught me a lot about my own capacity and the contrast of the lifestyle of the Bajau and my own raised questions which continued to shape the evolution of my thinking. After my time at Oxford, I completed a Masters and PhD on human dimensions of climate change. I now run a consulting company based in South Africa, and have conducted geographical research in over 15 African countries. I firmly believe that my undergraduate fieldwork experience played a key role in sparking this interest, and I am very grateful for the support from the Henrietta Hutton Memorial Fund'.

That Expedition, without a doubt, transformed who I thought I was and gave me the bedrock of believing in myself that continues to support me today'.

I remain very grateful to Henrietta Hutton's family for choosing to remember her in such a generous way.'

Outline: 'We were two geographers and a geologist and we spent the summer of 1967 in Cyprus studying and surveying the raised beaches on the south side of the island. It was an unforgettable adventure...that summer was to give me confidence in decision making, relating to other people and expressing myself clearly. It also established a life-long interest in travel. A further bonus has been the continuing friendship of the three of us. We reminisce with gratitude and hope that the Fund will be able to continue to support young travellers in the next 50 years'.

Outline: 'The Henrietta Hutton fund was so valuable to me because it really made my extensive fieldwork period possible. As a postgraduate student at the time, there is relatively little available to you that you can apply for, so I believe the fund truly fills a gap. One of the major things I got out of it was the personal experience of meeting and working with people from other cultures. It was truly humbling. It's also fascinating to think about Henrietta's legacy and all the expeditions she has supported to various corners of the world!'

Year: 1996

Outline: My dissertation fieldwork was my first experience of independent overseas travel, and the funding enabled me to research first hand a subject in which I was, and continue to be, passionately interested: earthquake preparedness. Receiving support from the Henrietta Hutton Memorial Fund was a golden moment in my academic career, which has contributed to my life since then in a number of ways. . In addition, the interpersonal experiences gained during my fieldwork have also been formative, and friendships that sprouted during my time overseas endure to this day. In academic, professional and personal capacities, the Henrietta Hutton Memorial Fund has been influential over a prolonged period. With heartfelt thanks to the benefactors'.

Year: 1997
Location: Barbados
Outline: The Fund helped me to undertake fieldwork for my geography BA. I spent two months in Barbados, looking at livelihood strategies used by low-income women and the way these had changed over the generations. I remember long days walking round a fairly rural area trying to find different people, then sitting on porches listening to life stories and learning about the ways people 'make do'. I learned a lot - about research and about the continuing extent of poverty despite economic growth. The experience influenced and supported my future career. It contributed to my decision to work in international development, and directly helped me to gain experience in this sector.

They had slaughtered a goat for the occasion, and they invited us in to join the men for the feast of rice and meat. The mother, I was told, would eat meat and blood only, to help her get her strength back. The food was delicious! After partaking of the feast, I wanted to greet the mother and give her a gift. The ladies in her bomba were all telling me 'Karibu, karibu' ('Welcome, welcome'), so I entered the dark hut which was lit only by embers burning on the ground in the middle. The ladies were having an intimate and quiet celebration and I felt privileged that they had allowed me to join them. I was overwhelmed by how welcome I felt at this party that I had stumbled into, and it was an amazing experience to join in the joyous celebrations."

Location: Brussels
Outline: 'The grant I received enabled me to spend a summer at the University of Louvain la Neuve near Brussels to carry out geological fieldwork examining Carboniferous mud mounds. The fieldwork helped to ensure I was successfully awarded a DPhil at Oxford University - and as a very useful side benefit allowed me to improve my French. I made many friends, and must have picked up the accent too as when I visit France now people often ask if I'm Belgian!'

Project title: Oxford University Expedition to the Kharga Oasis
Year: 1978
Location: Kharga Oasis Egypt
Outline: In 1978, as three geography undergraduates at St Hugh’s College, Oxford, we were invited by our College Tutor, Miss Marjorie Sweeting, to submit a proposal for an expedition of geographical significance to be sponsored by this award. Spurred on by her enthusiasm for physical geography we devised a project to study a ‘New Valley Development’ in Egypt. It was a fantastic and fulfilling trip for us as first year students. It confirmed our aspirations to travel and experience the world, to understand a physical and human landscape with its integral economy, politics and culture as well as achieving our own justified and independent study. For us individually, it represented a personal learning experience not to be forgotten and – to amend a well- known saying- confirms the need to learn geography through the ‘souls’ of your feet! We are forever grateful to our college –St Hugh’s, to the Royal Geographical Society and to the Henrietta Hutton Award for enabling us to have had such an amazing opportunity!

Project title: A study of primary healthcare for women and children in Mexico
Year: 1988
Location: Oaxaca Mexico
Outline: I contrasted the western, state-provided medical care via rural pasantes (first year medics) with the local Zapotec women's use of indigenous plant knowledge and traditional herbal medicines. I explored why, despite fertility regulation being a medical priority for the Mexican Government, the indigenous peoples of Oaxaca still had one of the highest fertility rates in the country. It was inspirational to have an opportunity like that to travel and research in a culture and environment totally new to me.I’d never been out of Europe before but I had had a lifelong passion for everything Latin American, especially the cultures and histories of the region, which is why I was so keen to go there.I think it was only something like one hundred and fifty pounds - but that was a lot of money back then and the funding really did change my life.
