VE Day 70 Exhibition
Trafalgar Square 8,9 &10 May
City Hall, The Queens Walk, London SE1 2AA 8 May – 5 June. Mon-Fri
On VE Day 8 May 1945 hundreds of thousands of people came out onto the streets of central London. They were there to celebrate the end of World War II in Europe. In Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square, huge crowds listened intently as King George VI’s speech was relayed by loudspeaker. Many more waited outside the Ministry of Health in Whitehall to hear Churchill proclaim those famous words, “This is your victory”.
The 2 exhibitions are organised by Mayor of London and bring together a collection of unforgettable images from Imperial War Museum, Museum of London and Getty Images. They capture a moment in history that still resonates across Europe – and the world – today.
