"I want to talk about two marriages that occurred 48 years ago. I'll talk about mine first. When I married Gail it was a mixed marriage. She was a Missouri Synod Lutheran and I was a Catholic and my parents and brothers and sisters would not come to the wedding.Rep. Gottwalt has said 'let the people decide.' Well let me tell you about the people 48 years ago in this country. The other couple that got married 48 years ago was Barack Obama's parents. A black man and a white woman, and at that time in 26 states it was illegal for a black and a white to marry and that's what the people of those 26 states decided that was proper. The Gottwalt bill will take us back 48 years ... We've come a long way baby and I don't want to go back."

"As you know, the bill passed to put the constitutional ballot question before Minnesota voters in 2012. Currently in state law, marriage is defined as between one man and one woman, which I support. This ballot question will allow the people of Minnesota, not judges or legislators, to decide whether to confirm the current definition of marriage by placing it in the State Constitution. I voted for the bill and think it’s a good idea for the voters to have their final say in this important choice." - From letter to constituent (5/26/11)
