Country: Laos Case 1: A 14-year-old Laotian girl came to the United States to marry a man who falsified her age as 18. The man hid her green card and Social Security card, and forbade her to get a job or go to school. After she had children, the young woman was allowed to go to school, but the man refused to bring her there. He abused her and threatened her with deportation if she tried to divorce him. They provide false birth dates to make the girls appear older and bring them back to the U.S. However, when they arrive, some of these girls are abused and told they will be sent back to Laos if they tell anyone. Country: Mexico Case 1: Two 15-year-old Mexican girls came to the U.S. seeking employment. The person who recruited them told the girls’ parents they would have jobs, go to school, live with a family, and the money they earned would be sent home to Mexico. When the teen-agers arrived, they were put in a trailer near a farm worker’s camp, given drugs and forced into prostitution. One of the girls became pregnant. However, after she was married, her husband physically and psychologically abused her, including coercing her to illegally obtain prescription drugs for him. Country: Philippines Case 1: An American sex offender brought a Filipina woman to the U.S. on a fiancé visa. He promised to get her a job so she could send money back to her family. When she arrived, he hired a physician to perform breast enlargement surgery and forced her to work at a topless bar in Milwaukee. He strip-searched her every night and forced her to clean his apartment wearing only high heels. Source: Wisconsin Office of Justice Assistance. Case 2: A Brookfield couple, both medical doctors, brought a 19-year-old Filipina woman to the U.S. and forced her to work for them as a maid for 19 years. They hid her in their basement, not allowing her to contact anyone except for her family back home. They threatened to get her deported if she tried to get help.
