Name: Camping - Ceder Point Campground in the Croatan National Forest
Description: The Croatan National Forset and the Cedar Point campground offer many outdoor opportunities, from hunting, hiking, fishing, camping, canoeing, sea kayak and bird watching.

This a favorite campground with just enough spots to nab one without reservation and the sites are just spread out enough in a glade of tall pine. Heated restrooms and showers too.

A 60 second drive from the campground is a NFS boat ramp, accessing the White Oak River. A major grocery store is also about 10 easy minutes away.

Description: The Refuge’s main feature is Lake Mattamuskeet (40,000 acres) and is North Carolina’s largest natural lake.

Significant wintering populations of ducks, Canada geese, snow geese and tundra swans. Also, concentrations of bald eagles and other raptors, wading birds and shorebirds occur seasonally.

Significant fishery resources including largemouth bass, sunfish (bream), white perch, crappie, alewives (herring) and blue crabs are associated with Lake Mattamuskeet and canals.

Name: Paddle Trail - Bear Island/Hammocks Beach State Park
Description: Perhaps one of the most popular kayak trails in eastern NC. The trail is one of the few trails, and perhaps only one, that allows easy passage to an undeveloped coastal island.

The marked trail is 3 miles long, leaving from a floating kayak dock at park HQ and arrives at the east end of Bear Island.

While variations of the trail can be found easily, for the most enjoyment, you should arrive at the island close to high tide. Low tide requires dragging your boat in ~2" of water to reach Bear Island's bay once you reach the island.

There is also fantastic, highly primitive camping on the island.

Description: A great paddle but due to the dynamic conditions of open waters of the sound, this is not an area for novice paddlers. Any beginner paddler should have the temperament and technique to handle winds up to 15 knots creating waves up to two feet. The tidal current is 3-4 knots in the channels.

With the tide and wind in your favor, it will take approximately an hour to paddle across the two to three miles of open sound water to reach the Lighthouse from Harkers Island. For your safety, be sure to file a float plan before paddling.

Description: Although bears have not been seen near the Bear Run platform, they've left "evidence" nearby. The Roanoke provides habitat for many species of mammals, fish and birds....just one of the benefits for paddling campers.

Bear Run's main camping platform is a spacious 28 x 16–foot area accessed by two large stepping platforms which rise up from a long boardwalk. The "privy" is located along the boardwalk.

A large dock welcomes boaters. You will hear sounds of civilization on this platform, which is less "remote" than Barred Owl Roost, Beaver Lodge and Cypress Cathedral.

Description: In Williamston, NC - located at the boat landing. This platform has 2 heated showers with coded entry attached to a public restroom (both are 100 ft. away), two picnic tables inside and full roof & walls.

This location makes for an ideal resupply of food (short walk to stores) and water (best source is Moratoc Park, so either a 5 minute walk or short paddle depending upon current). The platform is 24' x 24'.

Don't expect much quite since the boat ramp is quite active and is near a popular bridge crossing.
