Paul Glewwe, a professor in the Department of Applied Economics, is part of the Oxford University-based team that is gathering data about the health and education of children in those countries. The project began in 2002 with surveys of 12,000 1- and 8-year-olds; follow-up surveys were conducted in 2006 and 2009 and will expand to include transitions to work and adulthood as the children are revisited in 2013 and in future years. By gathering the data, researchers can track the factors contributing to hunger and poverty, and develop solutions to address those challenges. Glewwe is one of three recipients of the University of Minnesotas 2012 Award for Global Engagement.
