<b>Memory:</b> <a href="I%20attended%20the%202006%20American%20Library%20Association%20Annual%20Conference%20in%20New%20Orleans.%20I%20shared%20an%20airport%20shuttle%20with%20other%20attendees.%20The%20shuttle%20driver%20dropped%20off%20everyone%20else%20at%20their%20hotels,%20then%20asked%20me," target="_blank">I attended the 2006 American Library Association Annual Conference in New Orleans. I shared an airport shuttle with other attendees. The shuttle driver dropped off everyone else at their hotels, then asked me, "Sister, could I show you my neighborhood?" It was late, nearly dark, and he drove me around for 15-20 minutes, on a ghostly tour of destroyed homes, streets where all you heard was crickets and all you saw was the shining eyes of critters scuttling along, past cars that had been pushed up onto porches by the Katrina floodwaters and were still there, nearly a year later. It was eerie and sad and shocking, and it was right here in America.</a><br>

We spent most of our time here in high school as it was located so closely to the beach. I couldn't believe how it looked once I returned after the hurricane. The property and the street it was located on were completely unrecognizable and I had a hard time even finding where the house once was since all of the familiar landmarks were gone.</a><br>

<b>Memory:</b> <a href="The%20strangest%20thing%20about%20returning%20home%20after%20the%20hurricane%20was%20having%20trouble%20finding%20certain%20homes%20and%20landmarks.%20With%20street%20signs%20blown%20away%20and%20no%20houses%20left%20on%20the%20street,%20it%20was%20hard%20to%20tell%20exactly%20where%20things%20use%20to%20be.%20I%20would%20drive%20down%20streets%20I%20knew%20my%20entire%20life%20and%20had%20no%20idea%20where%20I%20was%20because%20everything%20that%20was%20familiar%20was%20now%20gone.%20This%20photo%20shows%20how%20people%20began%20spray%20painting%20their%20addresses%20on%20debris%20to%20help%20people%20know%20where%20they%20were." target="_blank">The strangest thing about returning home after the hurricane was having trouble finding certain homes and landmarks. With street signs blown away and no houses left on the street, it was hard to tell exactly where things use to be. I would drive down streets I knew my entire life and had no idea where I was because everything that was familiar was now gone. This photo shows how people began spray painting their addresses on debris to help people know where they were.</a><br>

<b>Memory:</b> <a href="This%20is%20the%20location%20of%20the%20cottage%20my%20mom%20was%20living%20in%20at%20the%20time%20of%20the%20hurricane.%20The%20cottage%20was%20washed%20away%20by%20the%2030+%20foot%20storm%20surge%20that%20hit%20her%20neighborhood.%20The%20van%20is%20sitting%20where%20the%20cottage%20was%20and%20we%20have%20no%20clue%20who%20the%20van%20belongs%20to.%20Many%20of%20the%20people%20in%20Waveland,%20MS%20did%20not%20evacuate%20and%20stayed%20in%20their%20homes%20during%20the%20storm.%20Anyone%20who%20lived" target="_blank">This is the location of the cottage my mom was living in at the time of the hurricane. The cottage was washed away by the 30+ foot storm surge that hit her neighborhood. The van is sitting where the cottage was and we have no clue who the van belongs to. Many of the people in Waveland, MS did not evacuate and stayed in their homes during the storm. Anyone who lived "south of the train tracks" where this cottage was located was actually visited by the local police department who enforced a mandatory evacuation, obviously for good reasons.</a><br>

It was such a beautiful street; very narrow, tree lined and with a view directly to the beach and the water. As you can see from the photo, even the paved road was washed away on this street by the 30+ foot storm surge.</a><br>

My brother made a make-shift hammock out of fallen trees and a fishing net. This helped him stay cool at night while he slept and also allowed him to guard our home from looters. </a><br>

This street was once lined with homes of families who had lived on that street for many years. This photo was taken a few weeks after the hurricane. The city had cleared the street for vehicles to drive on it by this time but as you can see the homes and properties were still in the state of destruction as they were when the hurricane made landfall.</a><br>

<b>Memory:</b> <a href="This%20photo%20is%20the%20front%20yard%20of%20my%20childhood%20home%20once%20the%20water%20started%20receding.%20My%20youngest%20brother%20opened%20the%20front%20door%20of%20our%20home%20once%20the%20water%20stopped%20rising%20in%20the%20house%20in%20the%20hopes%20of%20speeding%20up%20the%20process%20of%20getting%20the%20water%20out%20of%20the%20house.%20When%20he%20finally%20was%20able%20to%20open%20the%20door,%20there%20was%20such%20much%20water%20trying%20to%20rush%20out%20of%20the%20house%20through%20the%20front%20door%20that%20it%20created%20a%20current%20that%20started%20to%20sweep%20him%20away%20and%20out%20of%20the%20house.%20My%20other%20brother%20was%20able%20to%20grab%20him%20and%20pull%20him%20back%20into%20the%20house%20in%20time%20and%20the%20water%20soon%20receded%20from%20the%20house." target="_blank">This photo is the front yard of my childhood home once the water started receding. My youngest brother opened the front door of our home once the water stopped rising in the house in the hopes of speeding up the process of getting the water out of the house. When he finally was able to open the door, there was such much water trying to rush out of the house through the front door that it created a current that started to sweep him away and out of the house. My other brother was able to grab him and pull him back into the house in time and the water soon receded from the house.</a><br>

<b>Memory:</b> <a href="This%20is%20a%20photo%20of%20the%20kitchen%20in%20the%20home%20I%20grew%20up%20in%20as%20the%20flood%20waters%20were%20filling%20up%20the%20house.%20As%20you%20can%20see,%20the%20refrigerator%20turned%20into%20a%20flotation%20device%20and%20began%20floating%20all%20throughout%20the%20house.%20Unseen%20in%20this%20photo%20is%20the%20china%20cabinet%20that%20was%20kept%20in%20the%20corner%20of%20the%20kitchen.%20In%20the%20bottom%20of%20that%20china%20cabinet%20were%20storage%20cabinets%20where%20all%20of%20my%20brother's%20and%20my%20baby%20photos%20were%20stored.%20When%20the%20house%20first%20began%20to%20fill%20with%20water,%20my%20family%20rushed%20to%20try%20and%20save%20the%20baby%20photos.%20A%20good%20number%20of%20them%20were%20thrown%20into%20the%20blue%20storage%20bin%20in%20the%20photo%20but%20most%20were%20lost%20in%20the%20water." target="_blank">This is a photo of the kitchen in the home I grew up in as the flood waters were filling up the house. As you can see, the refrigerator turned into a flotation device and began floating all throughout the house. Unseen in this photo is the china cabinet that was kept in the corner of the kitchen. In the bottom of that china cabinet were storage cabinets where all of my brother's and my baby photos were stored. When the house first began to fill with water, my family rushed to try and save the baby photos. A good number of them were thrown into the blue storage bin in the photo but most were lost in the water. </a><br>

When I saw the National Weather rep., the Mayor and the Governor all looking very scared as well as the satellite image of the storm taking up the entire gulf, I decided to GO. I left my home with 3 days of clothing at 11 pm that night and drove all night to Austin, Tx. On Tues. after the storm had passed but I saw that the levees had been breached I called my tenants. They said the house was fine but there was water in the street! I told them to get out and go to Lindy Boggs Hospital. They waded there and were helicoptered out of NO from Bayou St. John. The street had 6 feet of water, my house had 4 feet. I had left Mid City. It took days to find friends, many of whom had stayed and endured far more than I.</a><br>

of algiers to traverse across the greater new orleans bridge for my first and omly time in my 28 years that i livved in n o ! no fear of arrest by police and no real competing automotive traffic ..... it was pretty much...all pedestrian traffic on the fabled GNO bridge all ferry service on the ol man river was savaged!! when i got to the ordered destination, the now devstated new orleans convention center.......... me and several hundreds or maybe a thousand or whatever were sort of cooped up in a less than comfortable but otherwise safe bldg. rumor had it that there was sum breakdown of law and order and it may have been that the less nobler facets of human nature may have wreaked sum havoc....... i myself never saw of such outrite ugliness and i am grateful... the superdome,new orleams pride and joy for many years, was allegedly destroyed by both the storm and the negative aspect of human nature,or so i hav ben told!!! none of us suffereed for want....we did get decent supplies of food, and sanitary aids!!! in good time, i saw many different divisions of various army and air national guards of various U.S. states finally patrolling new orleanian streets and i was even intervued by sum well spoken central european journalist...i think that he was a german newsman. the fundamental question facing us katrinans was when we were all going to leev n o, and wherer for sum 5 long days !!! Surprise! i didnt haf to wait up to labor day or beyond...on 5 sept or afterwards!!! it would be at last day of the calendar week of katrina,, 28 august to 3 sept in 2005.......of course, sat, 3 sept,in 2005! I was heading to a new life to the west...west of louisiana,similar to my ancestors in long ago prairie wagons one hundred years before i were born ... only that i were airlifted and not traveling on the ground!!! Literally thank God Almighty !!!!!!!
